The Film Festival dedicates a tribute to the American director and \u201cNew Hollywood\u201d icon in Lucca and Viareggio from the 3<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>rd<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup> to the 10<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup> of April. During his stay, a documentary will be filmed on the filmmaker\u2019s relationship with Giacomo Puccini.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"william_friedkin\"The Oscar-winning American director and \u201cNew Hollywood\u201d major filmmaker William Friedkin<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> will be among the guests of the Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema 2016, which will take place in the Tuscan city and in Viareggio from Sunday 3 April to Sunday 10 April 2016. The Festival will pay tribute to the director, producer and screenwriter of cult films such as <\/span><\/span><\/span>The Exorcist<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>The French Connection<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>To Live and Die in LA<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> with screenings of his best-known films, a masterclass and a Gala evening during which Friedkin will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Additionally, during his stay in Italy, a documentary titled “Puccini by Friedkin” will be filmed. A work that will explore the relationship between “Director of Evil” and the great composer from Lucca.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Having recently announced the <\/span><\/span><\/span>attendance of the Master of zombie movies George Romero<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>, the Festival\u2019s Red Carpet takes on a deeper hue of terror thanks to Friedkin\u2019s presence, one of the greatest innovators of the horror and crime genres. The section is curated by Daniela Catelli, Nicola Borrelli and Stefano Giorgi. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Friedkin will take part in all events<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> dedicated to him starting with the opening press conference on <\/span><\/span><\/span>Saturday 2 April<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>, followed <\/span><\/span><\/span>on the evening of Sunday 3 April by the Gala Evening and presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>together with a Prize from the Fondazione Giacomo Puccini. After the award ceremony, William Friedkin will introduce his film <\/span><\/span><\/span>Sorcerer<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. On the <\/span><\/span><\/span>morning of Monday 4 April<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>, in Lucca, the director will hold his masterclass, whereas on the <\/span><\/span><\/span>evening of Tuesday 5 Apri<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>l Friedkin will be in Viareggio to present the unforgettable masterpiece by Federico Fellini <\/span><\/span><\/span>Amarcord<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the version restored by the Cineteca di Bologna.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The program also includes a retrospective that will include Friedkin\u2019s most popular works; from <\/span><\/span><\/span>The Exorcist<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> (1973), the controversial milestone of horror cinema, to <\/span><\/span><\/span>The French Connection<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> (1971) that rewrote the equation of the detective genre, winning five Oscars. From the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Sorcerer<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, a story of four outlaws on the run, to <\/span><\/span><\/span>Killer Joe<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> (2011), an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tracy Letts, presented at 68<\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup> Venice Film Festival starring an extraordinary Matthew McConuaghey in the leading role, to conclude with <\/span><\/span><\/span>Bug<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> (2006), a murky story where paranoia is center stage.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

William Friedkin also directed <\/span><\/span><\/span>Gianni Schicchi<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> at the Washington National Opera and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Il Tabarro<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Suor Angelica<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> at the Los Angeles Opera. \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Directing Giacomo Puccini\u2019s works was one of the most rewarding moments of my career,<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d stated Friedkin. For this reason, the Festival\u2019s organizers in collaboration with the Fondazione Giacomo Puccini will produce a <\/span><\/span><\/span>52-minute documentary<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> where the American director will explain his relationship with the great composer and Maestro from Lucca. This documentary will be the first in a series of works that every year will be offered to festival testimonials to narrate the relationship between film and Puccini\u2019s opera and music.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema directed by Nicola Borrelli, is one of the key events organized and sponsored by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca. The exhibits are organized and produced in collaboration with the Comitato Nuovi Eventi per Lucca with the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>support of <\/span><\/span><\/span>Banca Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale.
