Argentinian director, screenwriter, editor and producer Gaspar No\u00e9<\/strong> will be one of the guests of honor at the Lucca Film Festival<\/strong>, leading event of the Italian cultural scene taking place from September 23rd<\/sup> to October 2nd<\/sup>, 2022 in Lucca<\/strong>. Director of films such as Irr\u00e9versible<\/strong>, Enter the Void<\/strong> and Love, <\/strong>Gaspar No\u00e9 will be the protagonist of a retrospective<\/strong> of his feature films, edited by journalists Paolo Zelati<\/strong> and Stefano Giorgi –<\/strong> from the artistic direction of the festival – and taking place in different locations around the city. On September 23rd<\/sup>\u00a0the director will also hold a Masterclass<\/strong> at the Cinema Astra, moderated by Paolo Zelati<\/strong> and followed by the awarding of the Lifetime Achievement Award<\/strong> in his honor. The Lucca Film Festival<\/strong>, organised with the support of Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca<\/strong>, will also show Vortex<\/em><\/strong>, latest film by the director from Buenos Aires. Born in 1963 to Argentinian painter Luis Felipe ‘Yuyo’ No\u00e9, Gaspar No\u00e9<\/strong> emigrated\u00a0 to France with his family in 1976 to escape the National Reorganization Process<\/em> of Videla’s military council.<\/p>

His style and techniques make little use of narration and typically feature offensive and oftentimes hermeneutic cinematography, a violent and not very intimate treatment of sexual behavior and a pervasive sense of\u00a0 nihilism or social despair. No\u00e9 often breaks down the fourth wall, addressing the audience directly through the use of sometimes “stroboscopic” typography \u2013 as in the opening credits of\u00a0Enter the Void <\/em>\u2013 which aims at disturbing the viewer, similarly to the typographic methods used by\u00a0Jean-Luc Godard. His narratives take inspiration from films such as\u00a0Taxi Driver<\/em> and\u00a0A Clockwork Orange<\/em> and Stanley Kubrick’s films are in general a great source of inspiration for his work. He made his feature film debut in 1998 with Seul contre tous<\/em>, followed by the success of Irr\u00e9versible<\/em> in 2002 and gained the consecration as a cult director thanks to Enter the Void<\/em> in 2009. Then Love<\/em> came in 2015, followed by Climax<\/em> in 2018, Lux Aeterna<\/em> in 2019 and the latest Vortex<\/em> of 2021. Advertising director for Yves Saint Laurent, he directed various music videos, from Je n’ai pas<\/em> by Mano Solo to Prot\u00e8ge-moi<\/em> by Placebo to We No Who U R<\/em> by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.<\/p>

An international selection of films<\/strong>, both feature films and short films, all at their Italian premieres \u2013 including Tropic of Violence<\/em><\/strong>, which marks Manuel Schapira<\/strong>\u2019s directorial debut \u2013 will participate in the international competitions<\/strong> that are at the heart of the festival program. The competing short films will also be available online worldwide on Festival Scope<\/strong>.<\/p>

The competitions, as usual, are divided between feature films<\/strong> and short films<\/strong>. Both sections will have four juries: a jury made up of international audiovisual professionals (awarding a 3,000-euro prize to the best film for both sections), a popular jury, a university jury and a press jury. Among the new features introduced last year, the press\u00a0jury<\/strong>, made up of press and communication experts giving the\u00a0“Marcello Petrozziello” award<\/strong>, dedicated to the late homonymous well-known journalist and great communicator from Lucca, who was Press Office and External Relationships coordinator for Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca.<\/p>

International guests will liven up the days of the festival. Key guests and lifetime achievement awards for the editions between 2014 and 2021 include names such as David Lynch, George Romero, Paolo Sorrentino, Oliver Stone, Olivier Assayas, John Boorman, Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n, Terry Gilliam, Willem Dafoe, Anton Corbjin, Julien Temple, Stephen Frears, Martin Freeman, Matt Dillon, Rupert Everett, William Friedkin, Thomas Vinterberg, Lech Majewski, Rutger Hauer, Joe Dante, Paolo Taviani, Marco Bellocchio, Matteo Garrone, Sergio Castellitto, Elio Germano, Vinicio Marchioni, Sandra Milo, Valeria Golino, Laura Morante, Jeremy Irons,\u00a0 Philip Gr\u00f6ning, Cristi Puiu, Aleksandr Sokurov, Silvio Orlando, Lodo Guenzi e Alba Rohrwacher.<\/p>

Over the years, the Lucca Film Festival<\/strong>, chaired by Nicola Borrelli, has paid tribute to the great names of international cinema, such as Oliver Stone to David Lynch, Rutger Hauer<\/strong>, George Romero, Paolo Sorrentino and<\/strong> Willem Dafoe<\/strong>. It is one of the leading events of Tuscany\u2019s cultural scene, and made possible thanks to the contribution of\u00a0 Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca. Banca Generali Private Wealth Management (Paolo Tacchi) and Banca Pictet are the Main Sponsors of the event and exhibitions.
