Perche sei partito? Perche ti sei trasferito all’estero?

Sono queste le domande alle quali rispondono i giovani expat, che lasciamo l’Italia in cerca di un futuro diverso, migliore perché purtroppo all’estero si riesce più facilmente a realizzare i propri sogni. Spesso sono “cervelli in fuga”, ossia laureati delle nostre Università che riescono a garantire competenze e professionalità riconosciute al di fuori dei confini nazionali con stipendi più alti e più facili possibilità di carriera; ma anche “talenti in fuga”, ossia persone determinate a realizzare i propri desideri, nei settori più svariati, spesso ambasciatori del nostro paese con i prodotti “Made in Italy”.

Anche gli emigranti di fine ‘800, che accalcavano i ponti dei bastimenti che solcavano l’oceano, avevano l’ambizione di cercare migliori opportunità e quindi condizione di vita per se stessi e la propria famiglia. Emblematica e significativa la storia di Silvestro Zeffirino Poli, povero fugurinaio della Valle del Serchio che, emigrato negli Stati Uniti, divenne impresario e imprenditore culturale: nel 1893 fondò il primo teatro al quale darà il nome Poli’s Wonderland, da qui il nome del documentario, quindi altri 27 trasformati poi in cinema, facendolo diventare una figura leggendaria sia in America che in Italia.

Why did you leave? Why did you move abroad? These are the questions answered by young expats who leave Italy in search of a different, better future because, unfortunately, it is easier to realize one’s dreams abroad. They are often ‘brain drainers’, i.e. graduates from our universities who are able to guarantee skills and professionalism recognized outside national borders with higher salaries and easier career opportunities; but also ‘talent drainers’, i.e. people determined to fulfill their desires in a wide variety of sectors, often ambassadors for our country with ‘Made in Italy’ products. Even the emigrants of the late 19th century, who crowded the decks of ships crossing the ocean, had the ambition to seek better opportunities and therefore better living conditions for themselves and their families. The story of Silvestro Zeffirino Poli, a poor potter from the Serchio Valley who emigrated to the United States and became an impresario and cultural entrepreneur, is emblematic and significant: in 1893, he founded the first theater, which he named Poli’s Wonderland, hence the name of the documentary, followed by 27 others that were later converted into cinemas, making him a legendary figure in both America and Italy.
